Berat – “The City of a Thousand Windows” 🏰

Berat is one of the oldest cities in Albania, with a history dating back to the 4th century BC. The name “City of a Thousand Windows” comes from its unique Ottoman architecture – white houses with large wooden windows that create a distinctive landscape. Berat is home to a fortress where people still live – one of the few such places in the world. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its well-preserved historical buildings. Be sure to visit St. Nicholas Cathedral, which houses the Onufri Icon Museum, dedicated to the famous Albanian painter.

Vlora – The Gateway to the Ionian Sea 🌊

Vlora is the city where Albania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire on November 28, 1912. The city is located at the meeting point of the Ionian and Adriatic Seas, making it a unique spot on the map of Albania. Near Vlora lies Llogara National Park, offering breathtaking views of the Albanian Riviera. Muradije Mosque, built by the famous architect Sinan, is one of the city’s most important religious landmarks. In the vicinity, you’ll find the islands of Sazan and Karaburun, which were off-limits to tourists for years due to their military significance.

Ksamil – The Pearl of the Albanian Riviera 🏝️

Ksamil is famous for its stunning white-sand beaches and turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea, often compared to the Maldives. From Ksamil, you can take a boat to picturesque, uninhabited islets, perfect for snorkeling and relaxation. The water in this part of Albania is exceptionally clear, and thanks to the warm climate, swimming is possible from May to October. Local restaurants serve fresh seafood, especially mussels and shrimp from the nearby Butrint Lagoon.

Butrint – An Ancient City in the Heart of Nature 🏛️

Butrint is one of Albania’s most important archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was once a Greek colony and later a Roman metropolis – here, you can explore ruins of a theater, baths, and a basilica. Legend has it that Butrint was founded by refugees from Troy. The national park surrounding the ruins is home to flamingos, pelicans, and other rare birds.

Gjirokaster – The Stone City 🏚️

Gjirokaster is a museum city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its unique Ottoman architecture. Narrow cobbled streets and traditional stone houses give it a remarkable historical character. Overlooking the city is a fortress that houses a military museum and an exhibition of old tanks. Gjirokaster is the birthplace of Albania’s former dictator, Enver Hoxha – his former home now serves as a museum dedicated to the country’s communist history. The city is known for its original cuisine – be sure to try qifqi (rice balls with egg and mint).

Permet Thermal Baths – Albania’s Natural Spa 💦

The Permet Thermal Baths are hot springs with healing properties, surrounded by mountains and wild nature. The water temperature stays between 30-40°C year-round. Above the springs stands the famous “Ali Pasha’s Bridge,” a historical Ottoman-era landmark. Local legends claim that the thermal waters help treat skin diseases and rheumatism.

Blue Eye – A Mystical Spring 🔵

The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) is a natural spring with an intense blue color, reaching depths of over 50 meters. The exact depth remains a mystery – divers have not been able to reach the bottom. In the past, this place was accessible only to Albania’s communist elite, but today it is one of the country’s top tourist attractions. The water in the spring is ice-cold – around 10°C all year round, making a swim here a real challenge.
